Jaws was released on the 20th June, thirty five years ago. 35 years ago! It took $7m on the first weekend and went on to take $470m and is an iconic film. I remember seeing it for the first time and being frightened to death from the first dumdum derrdum to the end. I can’t remember how old I was, but I do graphically remember gripping the sides of the armchair as Brody’s face sees the fish and uttering the immortal words ‘we’re gonna need a bigger boat!’ It was the music, the claustrophobic scenes on the boat with the three desperate characters, the heat and the menacing destruction path led by the mammal. The film is incredibly well crafted, tight shots, ambitious zoom tracks and shows what Spielberg is truly capable of. It’s a timeless classic and I’m absolutely absorbed every time I watch it and it’s probably time I did again.
