This is my first cortado. It’s essentially an espresso shot with an equal amount of warmed milk, the consistency being similar to a flat white. Usually served in 4oz (100ml) amounts, it’s a small drink but with a strong flavoured hit.

A cortado is a beverage that consists of an espresso cut with a small amount of warm milk. The word cortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut), in the sense of “dilute”.

I’ve just realised reading more, that actually it’s a piccolo, something I was introduced to on my barista course, just a different name. Well, maybe a piccolo has steamed milk, I think there are regional variations.
